Design-Building New Opportunities

Newly signed legislation has made possible for K-12 and Community College Districts, along with County entities the use of the design-build delivery method. These opportunities will allow California’s public sector to take advantage of the strengths of companies in the private sector that focus on this integrated project delivery method. The benefits of utilizing this delivery method are many, but it really boils down to saving time and money, while minimizing frustration and improving quality.
For K-12 and Community College Districts, Senate Bill 614 reduces the threshold for projects utilizing design-build from $10,000,000 down to $2,500,000. Previously limited to a select few, these bills also allow any district or county to use design-build with the approval of their respective governing boards. This legislation may also foreshadow future legislation further broadening design-build opportunities. These changes alone will likely broaden the appeal to use this tightly integrated delivery method.
What does this mean for design and construction in the public sector and how should you prepare for this time and money saving project delivery method? There is a wide array of public and private sector collaboration in the works including owners, planners, architects, construction managers, general contractors and industry organizations. Come join this enlightening discussion.
